I obtained the Master’s degree magna cum laude in Biological Sciences at University of Calabria in May 2006. From 2007 to 2011 I was enrolled in the PhD program in “Molecular oncology, exp. imm. and dev. of innov. therapies” in the laboratory of Mol Haemat and Stem Cell Biology at University Magna Græcia of Catanzaro, under the supervision of Prof. G. Morrone. During my Ph.D. I studied the role of the transcription factor ZNF521 in the B-lymphoid differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitor cells. In 2008 I attended for two months as a visiting fellow the laboratory of Experimental Hematology at University Medical Center Groningen (The Netherlands). In this period, I have gained experience in the isolation of hematopoietic stem cells from human umbilical cord and in in-vitro methods for their analysis and manipulation. In May 2012 I’ve joined as a postdoc the group of Dr. Ugo Cavallaro at IEO. In these years, I’ve initially optimized the isolation and culture techniques for patient-derived cells from ovarian tissues. Then I’ve focused on the identification and characterization of ovarian cancer stem cells. I’ve recently identified CD73 as a novel player in the ovarian cancer stem cell biology. I’m currently investigating the molecular mechanisms that mediate the functional contribution of CD73 to ovarian cancer stem cell pathobiology. Furthermore, I’m assessing the feasibility and the efficacy of CD73-targeted treatments as a novel strategy of anti-OCSC therapy.
