Prof. Pier Giuseppe Pelicci, the Chairman, oversees all scientific and legal matters related to the department’s direction. He is a full professor at the University of Milan, President of the European School of Molecular Medicine (SEMM), and Scientific Director of Alleanza Contro il Cancro (ACC), a network of 27 cancer research hospitals coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Health, focused on launching multicenter, mechanism-based clinical trials.
Holding a medical degree, a specialization in Internal Medicine, and a PhD in Molecular Biology, Prof. Pelicci has devoted his career to groundbreaking research. He played a key role in uncovering tumorigenesis mechanisms, notably identifying and characterizing the PML-RAR and mutated NPM oncogenes in myeloid leukemia. He also helped establish the molecular foundations for several targeted treatments currently in use, such as retinoic acid and inhibitors of HDAC and histone demethylases.
More recently, his work has concentrated on the biological and molecular profiling of normal and cancer stem cells in leukemia and breast cancer, alongside investigating how DNA damage accumulates in both healthy and cancerous cells.
