ABCD (Associazione di Biologia Cellulare e del Differenziamento) is a scientific society whose mission is to promote the integrated study of cellular, molecular and developmental biology, based on the idea that the knowledge on fundamental aspects associated with cells’ function and response to environmental stress is critical to understand disease pathogenesis.

Since its foundation in 1983, renowned researchers in the field alternated as ABCD presidents. Sara Sigismundresearcher of the dept of experimental oncology and associate professor of the university of Milan– has been recently appointed as the new president of ABCD; the first female president of the society.

Aiming at sustaining the study of cell biology, ABCD is engaged in promoting the interaction among scientists, through national and international meetings, as well as in the education and training of young researchers.

For instance, to support young researchers’ professional growth, ABCD organizes every two years the National PhD meeting, where PhD students from all Italy have the chance to present their work and discuss with their colleagues. During the pandemic, its commitment continued and it organized a series of distinguished lectures that have remained freely accessible for three months to all ABCD members.

This year, from September 21st to September 23rd, ABCD has organized a meeting gathering prominent scientists, including Andrea Ballabio (TIGEM), Giorgio Scita (University of Milan and IFOM), Aurelien Roux (University of Geneva), Verena Ruprecht (CRG), Johanna Ivaska (University of Turku), Francesco Cecconi (Danish Cancer Society Research Center), Katia Simon (University of Oxford), Christian Frezza (CECAD), Nico Mitro (University of Milan and IEO), Anna Kajaste-Rudnitski (HSR), Nuria Montserrat (IBEC), Stephanie Ellis (Max Perutz Labs), Kim Jensen (University of Copenhagen), Antonello Cutolo (University of Naples Federico II), Tobias Walther (Sloan Kettering Institute), Na Ji (University of California Berkeley), Cordelia Imig (University of Copenhagen), Francesco Nicassio (IIT), Cristian Bellodi (Lund University), Stefano Biffo (INGM).
