Research Fellow Protein Biochemistry & Structural Biology - Ref. 2025-09-LS/48

The Biochemistry and Structural Biology Unit (BSU) at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO, Milan, Italy) is seeking a highly motivated research fellow for a position funded by the Regione Lombardia “Collabora e Innova” program, SAMET project.

The identified fellow will work on the biochemical and biophysical characterization of kinase fusion proteins in a wider project that integrates computational biology and biochemistry to determine the sensitivity or resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

Duration: 1 year, renewable

Salary: competitive salary depending on the candidate experience

Application deadline: 15th October 2025

Key responsibilities

  • Cloning, expression, and purification of kinases and fusions in coli, insect cells and HEK cells
  • Development of biochemical assays for kinase activity determination
  • Biophysical characterization of the recombinant kinases
  • Determination of the binding affinity with known ligands
  • Contribution to experimental design, data analysis, and preparation of manuscripts and reports

Required qualifications and skills

  • MSc degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics or structural biology (PhD not required)
  • Previous experience in cloning, protein expression, and purification with FPLC systems
  • Hands-on experience in protein biochemistry and enzyme characterization
  • Willingness to learn a working methodology and biochemistry-related techniques
  • Being proactive, fast thinking, precise, practical and well organized

Highly desirable skills

  • Previous knowledge of protein biophysics techniques (e.g., mass photometry, ITC, BLI)
  • Experience in kinase biology and enzymology
  • Previous participation in structural biology projects (X-ray crystallography and/or cryo-EM) will be considered advantageous

Application Procedure

Applicants must submit their application through the appropriate link and should include:

  • A detailed and updated CV
  • A cover letter that describes your motivation to join the BSU
  • Contact details of 2 referees
  • Any other documentation considered useful for the selection
